KAOHSIUNG — A series of pop-up events at Kaohsiung Main Station (高雄車站) is drawing increasing crowds to the station’s sunken plaza (下沉式廣場). Since January, the underground plaza has hosted street markets, themed displays, and cultural events that have gradually transformed the once quiet pedestrian space into a gathering point for commuters and visitors.

Last weekend, large mirrored walls were installed on the north side of the plaza to create a practice space for dancers. The launch event featured street dance performances and DJ music, attracting sizable crowds.
Many residents initially assumed the activities were organized by the Kaohsiung City Government or Taiwan Railways Corp. (台灣鐵路公司). The Liberty Times reports that in fact, the effort is being led by Global Mall (環球購物中心), part of Kindom Development (冠德建設), which holds development rights for the underground commercial space and a planned commercial tower at the station.

Company representatives said the priority is simply bringing people into the space and building familiarity with the station area ahead of the larger retail and office complex expected to open in 2028.
City officials and Taiwan Railways representatives, however, say they welcome the initiative, noting that activating the plaza will help the redeveloped station evolve into both a transportation hub and a lively public gathering space.
