Nvidia manager detained in Taiwan AI server probe

KEELUNG — An unnamed Nvidia manager has been detained in Taiwan as prosecutors expand an investigation into the suspected sale of high-end AI servers to China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Investigators searched the manager’s home and workplace on July 24 before bringing him in for questioning. A court approved his detention after prosecutors raised concerns that he could flee, destroy evidence, or coordinate with other suspects.

The manager is suspected of placing false information in business documents connected to the server sales. Prosecutors have not released his full name.

The first round focused on approximately 50 Super Micro servers equipped with advanced Nvidia chips. Investigators believe false documents were used to send the systems to restricted markets, with some servers reportedly travelling through Japan before reaching China.

A second round in June involved Super Micro’s Taiwan operation, distributor Albatron Technology, and data centre operator Chief Telecom. Two Super Micro employees were detained, while another two were released on bail.

The servers contain Nvidia chips, which are covered by US export restrictions limiting the sale of advanced AI technology to China. Taiwan’s investigation is mainly focused on suspected document forgery and related offences.

Nvidia said it sells through established partners that review transactions for compliance. Products diverted outside approved channels would not receive official service, support, or software updates. Prosecutors have not accused Nvidia as a company of wrongdoing.

The allegations remain under investigation and have not been proven in court.
