PINGTUNG — Students at Shan Hai Elementary School (山海國小) in Hengchun Township (恆春鎮) took their first laps on a lavender-purple running track when the school reopened its sports ground on Sept. 24.
The new track replaces a dirt surface built in 1992. Years of wear had left it with holes and uneven sections, while poor drainage caused water to collect after rain, the Pingtung County Government said. The renovation also added drainage works and a multipurpose court. The county funded the NT$16.34 million project, which ran from March to August, UDN reported.
Principal Yang Jui-lin (楊瑞麟) said the color was inspired by the track used at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Students tried it out during an opening ceremony held alongside the school’s Mid-Autumn Festival activities.
County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) said she hopes the renovated ground will serve nearby residents and students. The county plans to improve lighting so people can use it more easily in the evening.
