KAOHSIUNG — A gate that has served Zuoying Naval Base (左營海軍基地) for more than 75 years is due to close Wednesday as the navy shifts to a new entrance built farther west.
The move will free space along the base’s eastern edge for the New Provincial Highway 17 (新台17線). The city’s Public Works Bureau built the replacement gate, which was scheduled to open Sept. 30, the Liberty Times reported.
Known as the Zhongzheng Gate (中正哨), the old entrance stands near the intersection of Zhongzheng Road (中正路) and Jieshou Road (介壽路). It dates to around 1950, shortly after the naval command moved to Zuoying. Once the navy has transferred operations to the new gate, the city plans to incorporate the old site into the road project.
The new section of Highway 17 is scheduled to open in late October, according to the report.
