KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung’s new family recreation park at the former Taiwan Railways Kaohsiung Workshop is already facing a crowd-control test after more than 65,000 people visited during its opening weekend.
The Kaohsiung Family Recreation Park (高雄親子遊樂園區) drew more than 30,000 visitors on its opening day, Saturday, and about 35,000 on Sunday, the city government said.
The heavy turnout also pushed traffic to nearby Light Rail Kaisyuan Wuchang Station (凱旋武昌站), which recorded about 4,500 passenger entries and exits on Sunday.
The city said the park would be closed on Monday for inspections and adjustments to traffic flow and facility planning after the opening crowds.
Officials said the busiest period was from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., when visitor numbers and parking demand were highest.
The city urged visitors to avoid peak afternoon hours, use public transport, and follow on-site crowd-control instructions.
Visitors are encouraged to take the light rail to Kaisyuan Wuchang Station or Kaisyuan Ersheng Station (凱旋二聖站). On weekends in August, visitors can also take the MRT to Cultural Center Station (文化中心站) and transfer to a free shuttle bus.
Drivers and scooter riders are being asked to follow signs and staff instructions for parking, and not to stop temporarily or park on Wucing Road (武慶路), Ersheng Road (二聖路) or nearby streets.
The former TRA workshop was once known as a “train hospital” because it was used to repair and maintain railway vehicles. The city said the redevelopment preserves the site’s steel structures, maintenance facilities, and industrial features while turning the area into a large free semi-indoor family recreation space.
The park includes more than 30 play facilities, including cloud-themed trampolines, bouldering areas, high rope facilities, a pump track, and outdoor inflatable water play areas.
The city said it would continue reviewing traffic and facility arrangements to improve safety and visitor flow.
