KAOHSIUNG — Gangshan Eye (崗山之眼), a skywalk attraction on Siaogangshan between Gangshan District (岡山區) and Yanchao District (燕巢區), is targeting a reopening before the first day of Lunar New Year on Feb. 6, 2027, after an extensive renovation. The United Daily News previously reported the Lunar New Year target, while the Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau currently lists the broader reopening window as the first quarter of 2027.
The reopening plan follows criticism of the attraction’s previous management. The National Audit Office found that officials had not adequately planned the scope and timing of outsourced operations, had failed to enforce operator performance assessments and had not obtained building permits promptly for new structures.
A Kaohsiung City Government report said the renovation includes a redesigned entrance, a new shop, restrooms, shaded areas, improvements to an aging shuttle shelter and the conversion of a former ticket booth into a viewing platform with dining and rest space.
The report had projected construction completion in September 2026, but the attraction remains officially listed as closed for renovation. Trail signs are also being upgraded following recommendations from local hikers.
After construction, the city plans to seek a private contractor to manage the entire park and its shuttle service. The proposed arrangement would cover the skywalk, market, dining and commercial areas.
The 1.8-hectare attraction opened in February 2018. The Pingtung Times, citing Tourism Bureau information, reported that it drew about 730,000 visits in its first year. Annual attendance later fell below 300,000 as the initial surge of interest faded and the COVID-19 pandemic affected tourism.
The park’s centerpiece is an 88-meter, music-themed cable-stayed skywalk. According to the official attraction page, visitors can see Agongdian Reservoir (阿公店水庫), Kaohsiung 85 Sky Tower, and the Taiwan Strait in clear weather.
