KAOHSIUNG — Democratic Progressive Party Kaohsiung mayoral candidate and legislator Lai Jui-lung (賴瑞隆) unveiled his campaign headquarters in Zuoying District (左營區) on Tuesday, Oct. 13, featuring a 7.3-meter-high, 20-meter-wide graffiti wall and an oversized “doll bag” photo installation, according to TVBS.
The preview comes ahead of Taiwan’s local elections on Saturday, Nov. 28, the date set by the Central Election Commission.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁), who chairs Lai’s campaign headquarters, attended a blessing and painting ceremony with Kaohsiung City Council Speaker Kang Yu-cheng (康裕成), DPP lawmakers and city councilors, the Central News Agency reported.
Murals draw on Kaohsiung landmarks and industries
The Kaohsiung-based spray-paint team Chenme Art (沉迷人) painted the main exterior mural. Its pink-haired figure comes from Lai’s “Many Faces of Lung-lung” (百變隆隆) campaign advertisement and is labeled 權志隆, a wordplay on K-pop star G-Dragon’s Chinese name that substitutes the final character with the 隆 used in Lai’s name.
Lai and Chen also posed inside the oversized “doll bag,” a frame designed to create a forced-perspective photograph resembling the transparent bags used to carry character dolls.
Other artwork at the headquarters depicts tuna, squid and Pacific saury associated with the fishing industry in Qianzhen District (前鎮區), along with Jinhuang mangoes from Liouguei District (六龜區), Cishan District (旗山區) bananas and white jade radishes from Meinong District (美濃區).
Lobby illustrations reference the Pier-2 Art Center’s worker sculptures, a lighthouse, Kaohsiung’s light rail system and kites. The campaign said the designs were intended to connect the election space with the city’s industries, neighborhoods and waterfront identity.
Campaign emphasizes Lai’s government experience
Lai said the lighthouse imagery represented his ambition to guide the city and promoted his “Greater South Plan” (大南方計畫) as a framework for making Kaohsiung a city where residents could live happily. The statement outlined an aspiration but offered no additional policy details.
Chen said Lai’s experience in city government and the national legislature would allow him to take over municipal responsibilities quickly if elected. Chen’s remarks were made in his role as Lai’s campaign chairman and supporter.
An official Legislative Yuan profile lists Lai as a lawmaker since 2016 and notes his previous work leading Kaohsiung’s marine and information bureaus.
The headquarters is at No. 250 Zengzi Road in Zuoying District, according to Newtalk.
