KAOHSIUNG — The upgraded water play area at Starlight Riverside Park (星光水岸公園) in Kaohsiung’s Asia New Bay Area (亞洲新灣區) will officially open May 30, with new facilities including water slides, aquatic play equipment, and harbor-view swings.

The park covers almost 3 hectares, including a 1.3-hectare water play zone. During a trial opening last October, the city said the park drew about 80,000 visits in two days, with a single-day high of 25,000.

However, the trial opening also drew safety complaints after several children reportedly slipped on wet flooring, with some striking the backs of their heads. Parents also raised concerns about damaged pavement and cloudy water, while critics questioned whether the park had been opened before the final inspection was complete.

The China Times reported that a Kaohsiung City councilor said they welcomed the creation of a free water play space but urged the city to make safety its top priority by ensuring that anti-slip surfaces, drainage, shade, first aid, and cleaning systems are fully in place before the official opening.

The city’s Parks Office said it has made improvements after last year’s trial operation, including upgrades to floor slip resistance, added railings around the pools, controlled entrances and exits, and smoother visitor routes.

Officials said the railings have also been combined with seating and shade umbrellas. The park will close on fixed maintenance days each week for pool cleaning, water replacement, and equipment upkeep. New changing rooms, restrooms, and outdoor rinsing areas have also been added, the Parks Office said.
