TAINAN — An off-duty Tainan police officer was killed Tuesday morning after her scooter was struck from behind and she was then run over by a tour bus, local media reported.

Cheng Yung-hsin (鄭詠心), 28, served at the Yuping Police Station (育平派出所) under the Tainan City Police Department’s Fourth Precinct (臺南市政府警察局第四分局). She was riding a scooter along Anhe Road Section 2 (安和路二段) in Annan District (安南區) at about 7 a.m. when the crash occurred.

Police said a 20-year-old woman surnamed Tai (戴) was riding in the scooter lane when she allegedly failed to notice traffic ahead and hit Cheng’s scooter from behind.

After Cheng fell, a commercial tour bus ran over her upper body, causing fatal injuries.

Police said both Tai and the bus driver recorded blood alcohol levels of zero. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Third Precinct (第三分局), which has jurisdiction over the area.

Cheng’s family and former colleagues returned to the crash site on Wednesday for a traditional roadside mourning ritual, according to local media. Relatives said Cheng had been planning to take wedding photos with her boyfriend and had also been preparing for a trip to Japan.

Family members have criticized the response from the suspected at-fault rider’s side, saying they had not received an in-person apology as of Wednesday, local media reported.

Cheng was from Tainan and graduated from the dance department at National Taiwan University of Arts (國立臺灣藝術大學) before joining the police. She completed police special examination training in 2022 and was assigned to the Fourth Precinct in 2024.

The Fourth Precinct said Cheng had served for about two years and was known for strong work performance, sincerity, and good relations with colleagues.

During her time with the precinct, Cheng helped investigate several cases, including a 2024 drug case in Anping District (安平區), a hotel theft case involving three guests, and a welfare check involving an elderly woman who had been unreachable for several days.
