TAINAN, Taiwan – Police have raided an illegal casino hidden on the second floor of a metal building in Tainan’s Anping District.
The casino used several security cameras to watch the street and check everyone who entered. Customers reportedly needed an introduction from someone familiar with the business. They then had to call the casino and stand in front of a camera before the door was unlocked.
After receiving a tip, police watched the building for several weeks. Officers studied when customers arrived and waited for a chance to enter without warning the people inside.
The opportunity came late Friday night when the door opened for a customer. Police quickly entered the building and searched the second floor.
Inside, officers found electronic gambling machines, mahjong equipment, business records and more than NT$30,000 in cash.
Police arrested the alleged manager and detained six customers. Another person is suspected of installing the gambling machines.
The building’s location may have helped the casino avoid attention. There were few homes nearby, so noise from the machines and mahjong games was less likely to produce complaints.
The manager and other suspects have been referred for possible gambling and business regulation violations.
