KAOHSIUNG — The Water Resources Bureau (水利局) has begun work on a NT$50 million upgrade to the Chengcing Lake (澄清湖) lakeside path, adding separated pedestrian and bicycle lanes to improve safety around one of the city’s busiest recreation areas.
The project covers a 635-meter section of Huanhu Road (環湖路) in Niaosong District (鳥松區), between Wenchien and Dapi, the bureau said.
The work includes resurfacing the existing path, removing and narrowing parts of the central divider, adjusting the road layout, improving pedestrian and bicycle routes, and upgrading the surrounding landscape.
The bureau stated that cyclists currently share space with scooters and cars in some areas, which creates safety concerns. After the redesign, the central divider will be reduced to about 70 centimeters, making room for a 2.8-meter to 3-meter pedestrian and bicycle lane.
Railings will also be installed on both sides of the path to improve safety for people walking or cycling around the lake.
The bureau said the project is expected to be completed by the end of November and would improve connections around Chengcing Lake Scenic Area, while supporting recreation, tourism, and exercise.
