PINGTUNG — Pingtung County is looking to the Philippines for more international visitors, holding its first tourism promotion campaign there this month and meeting airlines, travel agencies and industry groups.

The county government said the campaign is part of an effort to expand its Southeast Asian tourism market after previous promotion in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Representatives met with STARLUX Airlines, China Airlines, and AirAsia, as well as Philippine travel companies Travel Warehouse Inc. and Horizon Travel & Tours Inc. They also held discussions with the Philippine Travel Agencies Association.

According to the county’s Department of Transportation and Tourism, discussions focused on the travel preferences of Filipino visitors, the development of tour packages, and potential joint marketing.

The county said the two sides are also considering familiarization trips to Pingtung for Philippine travel industry representatives and media.

Officials hope Pingtung’s location in southern Taiwan, along with its beaches, mountain scenery, Indigenous cultures and local food, can help attract Philippine travelers looking beyond Taiwan’s major cities.

Minister Yang Teng-shih of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines said Pingtung has advantages for developing international tourism because of its marine environment, mountain and coastal scenery, Indigenous cultures, and food.

The county said the visit also provided information about the Philippine market that could be used to develop future tourism products and overseas marketing campaigns.

Pingtung tourism officials said they plan to continue working with Philippine and other Southeast Asian tourism partners to increase the county’s visibility among international travelers.
