KAOHSIUNG — Heavy rain caused road flooding in several Kaohsiung districts on Saturday morning, Aug. 22. In Niaosong District (鳥松區), video showed fast-moving water around a displaced drain cover on Shenong Road (神農路), while flooding near Provincial Highway 88 in Daliao District (大寮區) left at least one vehicle stranded, according to the United Daily News.

Rain gauges in several districts recorded more than 200 millimeters during the preceding 24 hours. The United Daily News, citing the Kaohsiung Weather Station, reported totals of 250 mm in Siaogang District (小港區), 237.5 mm in Lingya District (苓雅區) and 236 mm in Daliao as of about 10:12 a.m.
Footage from Shenong Road showed traffic moving slowly beside the flooded section. Flooding was also reported in Gangshan District (岡山區), along Zuonan Road (左楠路) and on Jhongshan Road (中山路).
Near Highway 88 in Daliao, muddy water covered surrounding surface roads and reached near vehicle-door level in some sections, the United Daily News reported. A tow truck was seen after a vehicle became stranded.
The city raised its flood emergency-response level from three to two at 8:30 a.m., according to the United Daily News. The Kaohsiung Weather Station said Saturday and Sunday were expected to bring the weather system’s heaviest effects and warned of further short-duration heavy rainfall.
The cited reports included videos and photographs from affected areas but did not provide a citywide count of road closures, stranded vehicles or property damage.
