KAOHSIUNG — An 86-year-old woman suffered minor injuries when her bicycle collided with an empty Kaohsiung light rail train near Lizihnei Station (籬仔內站) on the morning of Oct. 12.

The woman, identified only by her surname, Su (蘇), was turning right from Kaisyuan Fourth Road (凱旋四路) onto eastbound Rueilong Road (瑞隆路) at around 8:10 a.m. when the collision occurred, according to United Daily News.

The Cianjhen Police Precinct (前鎮分局) said the train was departing Lizihnei Station northbound on a green signal. Su fell from her bicycle and suffered abrasions and bruises to her arms and legs.

Breath tests for both Su and the train driver returned zero readings. Police’s preliminary assessment pointed to Su failing to follow traffic signals, although the final determination of responsibility remains pending.

Police said two alleged traffic violations — improper turning and failure to yield to a mass transit vehicle — could bring combined fines of up to NT$2,400. They also plan to refer the case to prosecutors for investigation into suspected negligent endangerment of rail traffic.

Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation (高雄捷運公司) said the empty train was returning to its depot when the collision occurred. It resumed movement at 8:17 a.m., and no damage to the train was reported.

Police urged road users to obey signals and watch for approaching trains at light rail crossings.
