KAOHSIUNG — A new 1.6-kilometer trail around Guanyin Lake’s outer basin is nearing completion, adding another lakeside walking route near the boundary of Renwu District (仁武區) and Dashe District (大社區).

The NT$41 million project at Guanyin Lake (觀音湖) connects the outer basin with existing paths around the inner basin. Construction began Aug. 5, and the Kaohsiung Water Resources Bureau (高雄市政府水利局) said the outer trail was connected along its full length by the end of October. Planting and landscaping remain underway.

The path follows the top of an earth embankment, with a textured concrete surface and two stairways linking it to the inner-lake route. The bureau said work followed the existing terrain to limit disturbance, with trees and grass planted along the embankment.

The lake supports waterbirds and winter migrants, along with dragonflies, damselflies, and Taiwan window fireflies (臺灣窗螢).

Liberty Times reported that the new section joins an existing 1.8-kilometer inner-lake trail and includes more than 300 newly planted trees.

Originally used for agricultural irrigation, the lake also serves as a flood detention basin, taking excess water from Shihlong Creek (獅龍溪), the newspaper reported.

Readers can locate the lake using the Google Maps pin linked by Kaohsiung Travel. The tourism bureau lists its location as Yancheng Lane (鹽埕巷), Renwu District.
