    Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Taitung’s Beinan Area; National Alert Issued

    TAIPEI — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Beinan Township (卑南鄉) of Taitung County (台東縣) at approximately 5:47 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署). The quake had a shallow depth of 11.9 kilometers, with its epicenter located about 10 kilometers north of the Taitung County government offices.

    The strongest shaking, measured at intensity 5-lower on Taiwan’s seismic scale, was recorded in Taitung County. The tremor was widely felt across northern, central, and southern regions.

    Following the quake, the Central Weather Administration issued a national emergency alert covering Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Hsinchu City and County, Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou, Changhua, Yilan, Penghu, Yunlin, Chiayi City and County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, urging residents to “drop, cover, and hold on.”

    No immediate reports of casualties or major damage were released as of publication. Authorities warned of possible aftershocks and advised continued vigilance.
