KAOHSIUNG — Bare lawns, dust, and poor drainage at Kaohsiung’s Central Park (中央公園) have drawn complaints from residents, prompting city officials to say they will replant damaged grass and improve drainage.
The 12.7-hectare park is one of central Kaohsiung’s main public green spaces, with lawns, water features, ecological ponds, and walking paths. It is also used for public events, private activities, exercise, and family outings.
Residents have recently complained that several grass areas have become badly worn, particularly near Jhonghua Road (中華路), where large patches of exposed soil have appeared; the bare ground creates dust during dry weather or when crowds gather for events, affecting visitors and the surrounding environment.
Others have raised concerns about drainage after heavy rain from Typhoon Bavi’s outer circulation left large puddles in the park. Some areas reportedly remained waterlogged for days after the weather cleared, raising concerns about mosquitoes.
City Councilor Hsu Tsai-chen (許采蓁) urged the city to quickly inspect damaged areas and improve soil, drainage, and irrigation systems.
Hsu also called for more durable grass varieties, rotating use of lawn areas, and regular recovery periods to prevent further damage.
She said Central Park could become a better location for picnics, family lawn activities, and small markets if it is properly maintained.
The city’s Parks Office said it would inspect conditions at the park, replant grass in exposed areas, and work to improve drainage.
