KAOHSIUNG — Two drivers face fines and license penalties after allegedly failing to yield to an ambulance carrying a newborn in urgent condition in Zuoying District (左營), Kaohsiung police said Thursday.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Mingcheng 2nd Road (明誠二路) and Fuguo Road (富國路).
Police said a private ambulance was transporting a newborn showing signs of oxygen deprivation when two cars in front of it delayed its passage.
Although police did not initially receive a report, officers later reviewed intersection surveillance footage and video circulating online.
Police said the ambulance had its siren on and was carrying out an emergency medical transfer. A Tesla stopped for about 10 seconds before yielding, while a Peugeot did not move out of the way, affecting the ambulance’s route, police said.
Officers said both drivers violated traffic rules requiring drivers to immediately yield to ambulances, fire trucks, police vehicles, and emergency repair vehicles using sirens.
The drivers will be summoned to give statements and face fines of NT$6,000 to NT$30,000. Their driver’s licenses may also be revoked, and their vehicle plates suspended for six months, police said.
The newborn arrived safely at the hospital and was later reported to be in stable condition, local media reported.
