KAOHSIUNG — A free exhibition featuring artist Chang Li-jen’s (張立人) highly detailed “Battle City” series is now open at Neiwei Arts Center (內惟藝術中心), giving visitors a chance to walk through a miniature urban world built over 14 years.

The exhibition, titled “RE: Battle City” (RE:戰鬥之城), runs from June 6 to Oct. 26 and, as noted, is open to the public free of charge.

Chang, a 2009 Kaohsiung Award (高雄獎) winner, is known for creating dense model cities that mix memory, fantasy, Taiwan street scenes, and cinematic detail. The work does not simply reproduce one real city, but uses signs, shops, streets, buildings, and everyday objects to create a familiar but unsettling version of urban Taiwan.

The exhibition follows the success of “Battle City: Finale” (戰鬥之城.終), which drew major crowds at the Museum of National Taipei University of Education (北師美術館). The Kaohsiung show also presents “Taiwan Light: Second Round” (台灣之光 — 二周 — ), the first part of the “Battle City” series.

Neiwei Arts Center said visitors can reserve online for faster entry, though onsite queuing is also available. The exhibition is being presented by Neiwei Arts Center with Taipower Public Art (台電公共藝術).
