KAOHSIUNG — A section of Jingwen Street (京文街) near Jingfu Road (京富路) in Renwu District (仁武區) sank as deep as 1.5 meters Monday morning after heavy rain, prompting traffic controls and emergency backfilling, the Liberty Times reported.
No injuries or vehicle damage were reported. The Kaohsiung City Government Water Resources Bureau sent personnel to inspect the site and restricted traffic around the damaged roadway.
The road surface first began sinking Sunday evening, Aug. 30. The affected area expanded after rainfall intensified early Monday, Aug. 31, leaving sections on both sides of the roadway about 1 to 1.5 meters deep.
The bureau initially suspected that days of rain may have washed away material beneath the road, possibly after damaging an underground sewer line. However, contractors found no obvious pipeline damage during their initial excavation, and the cause remained unclear.
Numerous utility lines beneath the street made an immediate determination difficult. Crews began backfilling part of the road to prevent the collapse from spreading while continuing excavation beside the street in an adjacent parking area.
The district office said relevant agencies would continue investigating before completing permanent road repairs.
