KAOHSIUNG — Houjing Park (後勁公園) in Nanzih District has reopened following a major redevelopment, unveiling the new “Forest Bear’s Secret Castle” themed playground. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai attended the opening ceremony on Sunday, marking the park’s transformation from a site shaped by industrial history into a green recreational space designed for families and residents of all ages.

Chen credited Legislator Lee Po-yi for securing central government funding, as well as CPC Corporation’s neighborhood relations funds, bringing the total project budget to approximately NT$59 million. He also thanked the Kaohsiung City Council for its continued support of municipal budgets, noting that the establishment of the city’s dedicated Parks Department in recent years has significantly increased funding for park maintenance. “Building parks well is only the first step,” Chen said, emphasizing that long-term upkeep and inclusive design are equally important so parks can serve children, adults, and seniors alike.

Chen added that as Nanzih’s population continues to grow—particularly with TSMC expanding its presence in the area—overall living standards are rising alongside Kaohsiung’s broader urban transformation. Since taking office, Chen said, the city has completed 65 themed parks, each designed to reflect the demographic characteristics of its surrounding neighborhood.

The park now features nine themed play zones and 30 play installations, including sand pits, swings, trampolines, adventure challenge areas, and fitness facilities for older adults. These zones are connected by elevated “floating walkways,” with the centerpiece a 3D castle play tower integrated with a giant pink bear sculpture that welcomes children into a forest-themed adventure.
