Kaohsiung Opens Shorter Pathway to Cijin Lighthouse

Tourist hotspot Cijin Island set for even more renovations in 2026

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — The Kaohsiung City Government has completed a new pedestrian pathway linking the Cijin Ferry Station (旗津輪渡站) to the Cihou (Qihou) Mountain trailhead (旗後山登山口), reducing the walking distance to the Cijin Lighthouse from 950 meters to just 350 meters, city officials said this week.

The Public Works Bureau said the old route was long and complicated, making access difficult for visitors with strollers or mobility aids. In coordination with the Taiwan International Ports Corp., the city converted part of the lighthouse parking lot and nearby idle land into a direct pedestrian link, using durable, even paving materials to improve safety and aesthetics.

The project also included upgrades to railings along Haian Road sidewalks, removal of outdated signage, and demolition of an old inspection warehouse and fencing to improve visibility and views of the bay.

Earlier improvements to the Qihou Mountain trail leading up to the lighthouse included new asphalt concrete pavement designed to improve drainage, reduce moss growth, and lower the risk of slipping. The latest phase added street art, landscaping, and a shortcut connecting Haian Road sidewalks to the trail.

The bureau said the improvements will benefit tourists, local residents, and lighthouse and port staff by providing a safer, faster, and more attractive environment.
