Krosa is heading toward southern Taiwan, but its not clear yet how strong it will become or if Kaohsiung will take a direct hit. Still, city officials say residents should take appropriate safety measures starting today.
KAOHSIUNG — As Typhoon Ragasa (Nando) (樺加沙颱風) approaches with the potential for heavy rain and strong winds, Kaohsiung’s Public Works Bureau New Construction Office (高雄市政府工務局新建工程處) said Saturday it has completed citywide preparations to reduce risks and protect residents.
The Kaohsiung-based Taiwan Times reports that all active construction sites have undergone pre-typhoon safety checks by city officials. Scaffolding, fences and temporary structures have been reinforced, while loose materials were either covered with tarps or relocated. Pumps at excavation pits and basements were tested to ensure they can be activated immediately during downpours to prevent flooding at worksites and nearby communities.
Contractors were instructed to secure heavy equipment and protect construction materials. Emergency response teams have been set up, with 24-hour staff on standby throughout the typhoon.
At road and bridge projects, workers reinforced temporary access roads and traffic-control facilities, ensuring signs and barriers will not be dislodged by high winds. Temporary steel structures and work platforms were also inspected and secured. Drainage systems near temporary bridges have been cleared, and monitoring staff will patrol during the storm to provide real-time updates.
The bureau urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and use caution near construction areas during the storm. Citizens can call the 1999 hotline to report flooding, road collapses, or other construction-related hazards. Officials stressed that the city has fully mobilized flood prevention measures and will continue to track the typhoon closely to safeguard lives and property.
