Kaohsiung recorded 1,712 millimeters of rain in August, the highest total for the month since complete records began in 1931, according to the Kaohsiung Weather Station.
The monthly total was equivalent to about 93% of the southern Taiwan city’s average annual rainfall of 1,839 millimeters. It was also nearly four times Kaohsiung’s historical August average of about 450 millimeters.
The previous August record was 1,600.5 millimeters, set in 2018.
Rain was observed for 13 consecutive days beginning Aug. 19, the weather station said. Kaohsiung had 18 rainy days during the month, fewer than the August record of 26 rainy days recorded in 2018.
The weather station said the duration and volume of the rainfall were exceptional, with the city receiving almost as much rain in August alone as it normally receives in an entire year.
