KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung’s upgraded splash area at Starlight Waterfront Park (星光水岸公園) is expected to open in early to mid-May, giving families a larger warm-weather play space near the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.

The city spent NT$169 million on the expansion, which increases the water-play zone to more than 8,000 ping and adds new attractions under a “water and land” design concept. New features include a slide overlooking the harbor, an infinity-style swing photo area, changing rooms, and restrooms.

The splash area drew strong interest during a three-day trial opening in October, but the city shut it down afterward to make improvements. Visitors had raised concerns about slippery sloped surfaces leading into the water area, especially for children.

The Parks Office said it reviewed public feedback and wear on facilities after the test run, then carried out a series of upgrades. These included adding low railings, improving pedestrian flow, and installing more slip-resistant surfaces. Officials said the work has now been completed.

Kaohsiung City Councilor Kuo Chien-meng (郭建盟), who recently inspected the site, said the ground surface has been upgraded to reduce the risk of children slipping. He added that low outer railings have been installed to help guide foot traffic, while umbrellas, shaded areas, and seating have also been added around the park to make it more comfortable in hot weather.

In previous years, the splash area typically opened closer to summer vacation, but many residents are pushing for an earlier start as Kaohsiung heats up long before “summer.” As temperatures in Kaohsiung hit 31 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the city appears inclined to open the facility as soon as final safety approvals are complete.
