KAOHSIUNG — The city officially opened the Nanzihkeng Sports Center (楠仔坑運動中心) on Saturday, adding the city’s largest public sports center and its only one with a 50-meter indoor heated swimming pool.

The NT$710 million facility is the city’s first all-age sports center located inside a competition sports park. The city said the project received NT$200 million in central funding, with the remaining cost covered by the municipality.

According to the Sports Development Bureau (運動發展局), the Nanzihkeng facility is the 11th operational sports center out of a planned 15 for Kaohsiung. Beyond the pool, additional facilities include multi-use courts, multi-function classrooms, and a fitness center.

Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said Nanzih District (楠梓區) has grown rapidly, citing the National Stadium’s (世運主場館) concert economy, TSMC’s (台積電) investment in the district, and new development around the National University of Kaohsiung (高雄大學).

Deputy Minister of Sports Huang Chi-huang (黃啟煌) said Kaohsiung’s sports participation rate was 86 percent, above the national average of 83 percent, while 38 percent of residents exercised regularly in a 2025 survey.

The center will participate in a health initiative challenging participants to reduce their body mass index by 3 percent. Since July, seniors have received 600 social welfare points per month on their Senior Citizen Cards (敬老卡), with up to 50 points usable per visit at the sports center.
