KAOHSIUNG — A road collapse roughly 2 meters by 2 meters opened near the centerline of Ruilong Road (瑞隆路) in Cianjhen District (前鎮區) shortly before noon Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026, prompting police to restrict traffic in both directions, according to the Liberty Times.

The hole was filled with standing water. Officers cordoned off the affected area and directed cars and scooters into the outer lanes while city engineering crews worked at the site.

The report said it was not raining in central Kaohsiung when the pavement collapsed.

Ruilong Road is a busy commercial corridor lined with shops. The affected stretch has one main traffic lane in each direction, leaving limited space for vehicles to pass the work zone.

A separate Liberty Times report published Aug. 30 said the city began trialing painted pedestrian paths on Ruilong Road in May 2024, but illegal parking and conflicts among pedestrians, scooters and cars remained a concern.

Police deployed additional officers to manage traffic around the collapse.
