KAOHSIUNG — A modified Vespa powers a portable clam-farming landscape in a new KSpace exhibition opening Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (高雄市立美術館).
Artist Lin Yu-Sheng (林祐聖) combines airflow tubing, wind-driven machinery, clam shells, sound, and video in My Mobile Clam Shack: Southern Deployment Prototype (我的移動蛤仔寮：南方部署試作). The exhibition will remain at the museum’s basement-level KSpace Kaohsiung Experimental Site through Oct. 18.
The project begins with Lin’s father’s childhood memory of gathering wild clams on a sandbar. It places that family story alongside the spread of aquaculture and wind-energy infrastructure on Taiwan’s west coast, where intertidal landscapes have changed over time.
Lin uses the clam as a figure for his own years of moving between schools, workplaces, cities and artist residencies. The installation asks whether such movement is freely chosen or shaped by institutions, economic pressures and changing environments.
A mobile clam-farming system
The exhibition brings together four connected works in a setting that draws on both industrial machinery and an intertidal clam farm.
Visitors will be able to walk around a mobile cultivation system built with the Vespa and airflow pipes while hearing sounds associated with engines, ventilation tubes, the shoreline and clam-sorting equipment.
A large biomimetic clam will periodically move slowly across the floor. Its search for a place outside the water forms an ecological allegory about displacement and belonging.
Another section uses wind and projected images to create a quieter viewing area. The video While the Clams Can Still Remember (在蛤蠣還能記得的時候) moves from the father’s recollection of wild clams to the intervention of modern facilities in coastal environments.
Together, the works invite viewers to consider how memory, the body, and a sense of home shift when familiar landscapes are altered or lost.
