KAOHSIUNG — A woman released after serving 10 years in prison completed the final day of a care-worker training program the following morning and later received a job offer paying NT$36,000 per month.
The woman, identified by the pseudonym Xiaopei (小佩), was released from Kaohsiung Women’s Prison (高雄女子監獄) on Aug. 9, one day before her final practical placement was scheduled to end.
After arrangements were made by the prison and the organization cooperating with the program, Xiaopei reported to a long-term adult care day center at 8 a.m. on Aug. 10 and completed the placement, according to a Central News Agency report citing the prison.
She returned to the prison on Aug. 11 to attend the program’s graduation and employment-matching event, where she spoke on behalf of the graduating class.
Nine long-term care providers attended the event, along with representatives from the Kaohsiung City Government Labor Affairs Bureau’s Training and Employment Center.
One of the participating providers offered Xiaopei a position paying NT$36,000 per month. The employer and her expected starting date were not identified.
Xiaopei was among 20 women who completed the 129-hour care-worker qualification program. The prison said all 20 participants successfully completed the training.
Kaohsiung Women’s Prison commissioned the New Kaohsiung Red Cross Society (新高雄紅十字會) to run the program, which was intended to give women practical employment skills before their release.
Practical placements currently require inmates to travel to outside care facilities under supervision.
Warden Li Tsung-li (李宗莉) said the prison hopes to arrange practical training within the institution in the future. She said this would reduce the personnel required to supervise outside placements and allow more women to participate.
Information about Xiaopei’s conviction was not disclosed.
