KAOHSIUNG — A 23-year-old driver crashed into 11 parked vehicles in Nanzih District (楠梓區) after allegedly driving under the influence, leaving a trail of damage but only minor injuries, police said.

Responding officers found the driver trapped inside the vehicle and appearing disoriented, with a strong smell of alcohol. A breathalyzer test reportedly recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.23, above Taiwan’s legal limit. After regaining sobriety, the driver told police he had been drinking heavily with friends the previous night and was likely still experiencing a hangover when he set out to run errands.

He sustained non-life-threatening neck injuries but was conscious after being transported to the hospital. Police said the case will be referred to the Ciaotou District Prosecutors’ Office (橋頭地檢署) on suspicion of public endangerment under the Criminal Code. Authorities added that the driver faces a possible fine of up to NT$120,000, license suspension, and vehicle impoundment, pending further investigation by the traffic division.

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Youchang Rd. (右昌街) and Houchang Rd. (後昌路). The man, surnamed He (何), was driving a white BMW northbound on Youchang Rd. when he reportedly veered off course after passing the intersection, striking two parked cars and nine scooters outside a hardware store. Shoppers inside the store were startled, but no pedestrians were hit, according to police and fire officials.
