KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung has started work on a new 350-meter sidewalk along Xianzheng Road (憲政路) in Lingya District (苓雅區), part of a wider effort to improve walking access around the National Science and Technology Museum (國立科學工藝博物館) area.

The new sidewalk will run from Dashun 3rd Road (大順三路) to Lane 138, Xianzheng Road (憲政路138巷). Construction is being carried out block by block to reduce disruption. The project, with a total budget of about NT$25 million, is being funded in part through the Ministry of the Interior’s pedestrian safety improvement program.

The city said Xianzheng Road is an important neighborhood route within the Science and Technology Museum area. It is near Kaohsiung Special Education School (高雄特教學校), Kaisyuan Elementary School (凱旋國小), Dominic High School (道明中學), St. Joseph Hospital (聖功醫院), and also connects to the light rail, TRA Science and Technology Museum Station (台鐵科工館站), and the railway cycle path greenway.

Officials said the road currently lacks a dedicated sidewalk, forcing pedestrians and vehicles to fight for space. The city’s Road Maintenance Office said the project will add concrete sidewalks on both sides of the street, along with accessible curb ramps and adjusted crosswalk alignments. Existing streetlights, signal poles, utility boxes, and parking bays will also be relocated or integrated into the new layout.

The city said additional pedestrian-environment improvement projects are also underway nearby on Jiouru 1st Road (九如一路) in Sanmin District (三民區) and Wumiao Road (武廟路) in Lingya District, which it said should further improve transfer routes in the wider area.
