KAOHSIUNG — The city’s new children’s activity park, billed by the city as Taiwan’s largest indoor play area, is scheduled to open Aug. 8, Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said Tuesday.
The Liberty Times described the park as Taiwan’s largest indoor children’s play area, covering about 1.5 hectares at the former railway workshop site near the border of Lingya District (苓雅區) and Fongshan District (鳳山區).
The old Kaohsiung Workshop was once an important rail maintenance site, but the facility was left idle after operations were moved to Chaozhou (潮州) in Pingtung County. The city has since moved to redevelop the area through urban planning changes and land readjustment.
Chen said the park is nearing completion and is now in the final stage of construction and safety checks.
Deputy Mayor Lin Chin-rong (林欽榮) previously said the site would include a rope climbing system, bouldering area, balance-bike and inline-skating practice areas, a parkour practice zone, and a pump track: a looping course with bumps and banked turns for balance bikes, scooters, and other small-wheeled activities.
Parks Office Director Lin Tsan-ming (林燦銘) said the park will include more than 30 facilities, including swings, slides, and what the city described as Taiwan’s first “bubble bouncing” play feature. The site will also include water play and sensory play areas.
Lin said the park is being designed for children of different ages, as well as teenagers, adults, and older visitors.
The city is also planning a food area. Opening hours are still being discussed, but the initial plan is to open five or six days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Lin said.
