KAOHSIUNG — Unsecured round banquet tables flew from a pickup truck on Provincial Highway 88 (台88線快速道路) near Daliao Interchange (大寮交流道) at about 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, forcing motorists to brake as one driver became involved in a collision, according to TVBS News.

The incident occurred in Kaohsiung’s Daliao District (大寮區). The pickup was carrying red round tables of the type used for banquets and traditional outdoor catering, but the load had not been secured with ropes, the report said.

Video published with the report shows at least three tables falling into traffic lanes in quick succession. Vehicles behind the truck braked to avoid them, while one table crossed the guardrail and fell from the elevated roadway.

The motorist who recorded the incident said he had kept extra distance after noticing that the load did not appear to be tied down. He braked sharply when the tables landed in front of his vehicle.

The witness also said the pickup continued along the expressway without stopping. KHT could not independently verify the driver’s account.

A 41-year-old motorist surnamed Huang was unable to avoid a collision and contacted police, TVBS reported. Tables that went over the barrier landed on vacant ground, and no one below the expressway was struck.

Police have accepted the report and plan to ask the pickup’s owner to appear for questioning. Responsibility for the collision remained under investigation as of the TVBS report on Sunday, Sept. 6.

Police said the tables had been stacked above the sides of the vehicle without adequate restraints. They said the unsecured load violated Taiwan’s Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act and could result in a fine of up to NT$18,000.
