KAOHSIUNG — Major department stores and shopping centers across Kaohsiung are closed Friday, Oct. 23, as Typhoon Champi (薔琵) approaches Taiwan. Schools and offices in Kaohsiung and Pingtung are also closed for the day.

Champi’s storm circulation had begun reaching eastern Taiwan by Friday morning. At 6 a.m., its center was about 330 kilometers east of Eluanbi, moving north-northwest and forecast to turn north, according to the Central Weather Administration, as reported by CNA. Maximum sustained winds near the center were approximately 155 kilometers per hour.
Although the heaviest rainfall is forecast farther north, southern Taiwan remains exposed to strong winds. The CWA’s Friday warning includes parts of Kaohsiung and Pingtung where sustained winds could reach Beaufort force 9 or gusts force 11 or higher. Residents should avoid coastal areas and unnecessary outdoor travel.
The following Kaohsiung shopping destinations have announced closures for Oct. 23:
- Dream Mall
- Shin Kong Mitsukoshi
- Hanshin Arena Shopping Plaza
- Hanshin Department Store
- SOGO Kaohsiung
- Okayama Shopping Plaza in Gangshan
- Far Eastern Department Store Kaohsiung
- SKM Park Outlets Kaohsiung Caoya
- Talee Department Store
Local reporting confirms closures at several major stores, including both Hanshin locations, Dream Mall, Talee, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and SOGO. SKM Park is also included in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s announced shutdown. Customers should check individual operators’ announcements for reopening times and any separate arrangements affecting cinemas or restaurants.
For changing weather conditions, follow the CWA’s latest typhoon warnings. Friday’s closures do not establish whether schools, offices or businesses will reopen Saturday.
