KAOHSIUNG — November hasn’t arrived yet, but the conversation behind “Movember” is already getting started in Kaohsiung. The annual campaign uses mustaches to get men talking about health concerns they might otherwise keep to themselves. Two talks in Siaogang District (小港區) on Oct. 29 and 30 will bring that message closer to home, covering prostate conditions, erectile dysfunction and low testosterone.

The modern Movember movement began in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003. Friends Travis Garone and Luke Slattery were having a beer when they joked about bringing the mustache back into fashion. According to Movember’s own history, they persuaded 30 men to grow one during November.

The following year, the challenge became a fundraiser supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The mustaches proved useful conversation starters, helping turn an informal challenge into an international movement addressing prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. The name combines “mo,” Australian slang for mustache, with “November.”

The sessions in Siaogang form part of Taiwan’s 2026 Men’s Health Month campaign, organized by the Taiwanese Association of Andrology and Sexual Medicine (台灣男性學暨性醫學醫學會). Nine events are scheduled nationwide from late October through mid-November.

According to the organizers’ schedule published by True News, the Kaohsiung sessions are:

    Date and timeVenue
Thursday, Oct. 29, 9–11 a.m.Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital (高雄市立小港醫院), first-floor lobby of the outpatient building, 482 Shanming Road
Friday, Oct. 30, 1:30–4:30 p.m.Yuanta Bank, Siaogang Branch (元大銀行小港分行), third-floor VIP room, 678 Hanmin Road. Co-organized by Chang Mei-yu Urology Clinic (張美玉泌尿科診所).

The campaign aims to help participants recognize potential problems and understand when to seek medical assessment.

Association president Liu Chia-chu (劉家駒) said work commitments and embarrassment about urinary or sexual symptoms can discourage men from seeking care. The campaign encourages men to discuss those concerns rather than wait until they worsen.

Organizers also advise against buying unverified products advertised to improve sexual performance, urinary symptoms or testosterone levels, urging people to seek professional assessment instead.

The published schedule does not specify registration requirements, admission charges or interpretation arrangements. Prospective attendees should confirm those details with the hosting institution before visiting.
