PINGTUNG — A new NT$170 million public library in Jiuru Township (九如鄉), Pingtung County (屏東縣), is scheduled for completion in 2028, with reading rooms for children and older residents, exhibition space, and an outdoor terrace overlooking a nearby park.
The county government held a groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 4. The new building will replace a library that opened in 1984 and whose space and facilities no longer meet residents’ needs, according to the Central News Agency. The Ministry of Education (教育部) is contributing more than NT$85 million, with local funding covering the balance.
The three-story library is planned for a roughly 1.2-hectare site near the township’s administrative center and Balun Park (巴轆公園), which has an inclusive playground. Existing trees will be retained, 小鎮資訊 reported.
With approximately 2,530 square meters of floor space, the building will accommodate up to 100,000 books. The ground floor will house children’s and community reading rooms, including spaces for families to read together and for older residents. Displays and activities will also draw on Jiuru’s agricultural history and food culture.
The second floor will contain the main book collection and reading seats. Above it, a 150-seat auditorium, exhibition lobby, and outdoor terrace will provide space for talks, exhibitions, and educational activities. Digital reading services are also planned.
The county is separately developing a public childcare center in Jiuru as part of efforts to expand local services for families.
