KAOHSIUNG – Philippine officials signaled strong backing for a proposed revival of direct flights between Kaohsiung and Laoag, following a push from Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos.

Speaking at the Taiwan–Philippines Smart Port Development Forum in Kaohsiung, Araneta-Marcos said reinstating the route would significantly help overseas Filipino workers from Ilocos Norte, many of whom travel to Taiwan’s southern city.

She noted that workers currently need to detour through Manila, adding hours of travel and additional expense. A restored Kaohsiung–Laoag service, she said, would cut both costs and transit time for Ilocano families.

Araneta-Marcos also highlighted broader economic opportunities tied to stronger links with Taiwan. She said cooperation with the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) and Taiwanese tourism authorities could encourage new investments in the region, particularly in manufacturing and agriculture. Tobacco and garlic remain two of Ilocos Norte’s competitive strengths, she said, and partnerships with Taiwanese firms could expand those sectors.

Cruise tourism is also a priority. Araneta-Marcos said Currimao Port is being positioned as a premier cruise destination due to its proximity to Kaohsiung. The port recently welcomed nearly 2,000 passengers from Star Cruises, and provincial officials expect more arrivals as Taiwan–Philippines maritime travel grows.

The Philippines was named Asia’s Best Cruise Destination for 2023 by the World Cruise Awards and earned Best Port of Call for 2024 at the Asia Cruise Awards in Jeju. According to CNA, international cruise passenger arrivals are projected to surpass 170,000 in 2025, up from about 90,000 the previous year.
