Pingtung Residents Question Slow Progress on Long-Delayed Transport Projects

PINGTUNG — A group of residents and local observers in Pingtung County says frustration is growing over the pace of major transportation infrastructure projects that have remained in planning stages for more than a decade.

According to a review of county policy statements and legislative reports, multiple proposals—including highway expansions, rail extensions, and east–west express routes—have repeatedly appeared in annual policy briefings without firm construction timelines. While county officials have cited feasibility studies, environmental reviews, and coordination with central government agencies as reasons for delays, critics argue that limited progress on the ground has had tangible economic consequences.

Analysts note that prolonged uncertainty over transport connectivity may affect industrial investment decisions, contribute to population outflow, and widen development gaps between Pingtung and neighboring urban centers. Calls have increased for clearer schedules, milestone accountability, and stronger engagement with central authorities to accelerate stalled projects.
