KAOHSIUNG — Taiwan’s first direct presidential election took place in March 1996. Thirty years later, Kaohsiung residents will have a chance to discuss what changed, what did not, and how much of that history looks different from the south.

Those who sign up will be offered a free drink.

AmCham Kaohsiung, Formosa Files and Kaohsiung Times will present 30 Years of Democracy: How Taiwan Has Changed Since 1996 at The Hub, Wukuaicuo Park (五塊厝公園), on Friday, Sept. 18.

The evening will combine a mixer, a live panel discussion, and the recording of a special Formosa Files podcast episode. The recorded conversation will run for about 45 minutes, followed by questions and comments from the audience.

The organizers say the event is intended as a conversation rather than a lecture. It is also the first in what they hope will become a continuing series of public discussions in Kaohsiung about Taiwan’s history and the issues shaping its future.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. Advance registration is available here.
