KAOHSIUNG — You no longer need to register to play the white grand piano at Formosa Boulevard MRT station (美麗島站). Kaohsiung Metro has dropped the requirement and repositioned the instrument beneath the station’s Dome of Light (光之穹頂), making it easier for passing musicians to sit down and play.
City Councilor Kuo Chien-meng (郭建盟) said the piano’s raised platform had also been removed, thanking the operator for responding to suggestions from the public. He urged players to take care of the instrument, Knews reported. The change follows widespread attention to performances at Tainan’s new underground railway station.
The piano itself is a familiar fixture. It has been at Formosa Boulevard for more than a decade, previously available through a free registration system.
Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) welcomed the change on Oct. 28, saying Kaohsiung has plenty of talented musicians, composers and learners who could share their playing with the public, according to Liberty Times. He also pointed to public pianos at Weiwuying (衛武營) and Kaohsiung railway station.
Asked whether he might contribute a song himself, Chen joked that his appearance would send the audience running. He would need more practice first.
