KAOHSIUNG — A giant octopus and whale shark will be among the creatures taking over Kaohsiung’s waterfront this weekend as the city holds its final water-themed event of the summer vacation.

The 2026 Kaohsiung Ocean Party will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Singguang Waterfront Park (星光水岸公園) and the lawn beside C8 Kaohsiung Exhibition Center light-rail station.

The event will combine water activities with stage performances, children’s attractions, food trucks and a creative market.

This year’s theme incorporates the Round-Eyed Aquarium (圓眼水族館), a collection of cartoon sea-creature characters. The grounds will feature large octopus and whale shark installations, character displays and a themed photo wall.

Children can also join the “Ocean Adventure Team,” an activity area featuring a magnetic fishing pool and kinetic sand. Advance registration is available through the city’s Digital Citizen platform, with places limited. A small number of walk-in places will also be available at the venue.

The stage program, billed as the “Wave Carnival Show,” includes clowns on stilts, parent-child dancing and a bubble show.

Nearby, the Ocean Market will bring together local food vendors, food trucks and craft brands. Visitors can also use Singguang Waterfront Park’s upgraded water slide and harbor-view swing.

Mayor Chen Chi-mai on Tuesday instructed city departments to coordinate traffic control, safety and cleaning during the event. The venue is immediately beside the light-rail line and is accessible from Kaohsiung Exhibition Center Station.

Kaohsiung’s waterfront calendar will continue Sept. 5 and 6 with the fourth Kaohsiung Creative Raft Competition near Great Harbor Bridge. Teams will race homemade vessels built with an emphasis on creativity, humor and recycled materials.
