KAOHSIUNG — Phoenix Mountain (鳳凰山), located on the border of Fengshan (鳳山) and Daliao (大寮), is revealing a side long hidden from civilian eyes. The site — formerly known as “Chicken Mother Mountain” (雞母山) — has served for decades as a restricted training zone for the Republic of China Military Academy (陸軍官校).
After years of tight control, the military has recently agreed to open parts of the area to the public. Visitors entering the grounds found large stretches of natural greenery, golf-fairway-like lawns, towering old trees, and rare military features such as the 500-meter obstacle course still in use by the armed forces.

One of the most surprising finds is a small spring where locals can collect free mountain water, nicknamed “Phoenix Sacred Water” (鳳凰神水). The combination of natural scenery and remnants of military training has quickly turned the area into a quiet “local secret spot” for hikers and nearby residents.
Authorities note that only designated zones are open; military activities continue in other sections of the base.
