KAOHSIUNG — The rebuilt Jiuru Bridge (九如橋) is expected to open to traffic July 31, with final construction work now underway, the Kaohsiung Public Works Bureau said.
Acting Secretary-General Wang Chi-chuan (王啟川) inspected the construction site Saturday with Public Works Bureau Director Yang Chin-fu (楊欽富) and Transportation Bureau Director Chang Shu-chuan (張淑娟).
The bridge reconstruction project began in August 2024. The bureau said asphalt paving has been completed, while sidewalk work, traffic signs, and road markings are still being finished.
The city said the new road layout includes side access lanes, bus bays and dedicated left-turn and right-turn areas to improve traffic flow and safety.
The Transportation Bureau said the bus bays will allow buses to pull out of main traffic lanes while stopping, reducing disruption to through traffic.
Dedicated turn areas are intended to give drivers more space to slow down and wait before turning, reducing conflicts between vehicles moving at different speeds or in different directions.
Speed bumps have also been installed on side roads near residential areas to slow vehicles and reduce the impact of main-road traffic on nearby residents.
Officials said the rebuilt bridge is expected to provide safer daytime and nighttime conditions for drivers and pedestrians after it opens.
