KAOHSIUNG — Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung will suspend work and classes on Monday, Aug. 24, as a low-pressure system and strong southwesterly winds continue to bring heavy rain to southern Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Directorate-General of Personnel Administration listed the three localities as canceling work and classes for Monday in its Sunday evening update. The decisions are made by local governments, using weather forecasts and local conditions as reference.

The Public Television Service reported that the Central Weather Administration began its enhanced severe-rain operation at 5 p.m. Saturday and expects the weather pattern to ease only on Tuesday. It warned that Pingtung could receive more than 100 mm of rain in a 12-hour period, while other areas may see short, intense afternoon downpours.

Flooding and road disruptions have already been reported across the region. As of 9 a.m. Sunday, the Water Resources Agency had recorded 199 flooding cases since Thursday: 52 in Tainan, 130 in Kaohsiung and 17 in Pingtung, according to Mirror Media. Forty-two locations, including 37 in Kaohsiung, had not yet fully drained at that time.

Residents should continue to check local road, school and employer notices before traveling, especially in low-lying and mountain areas.
