KAOHSIUNG — Road resurfacing and safety improvements around Meinong Lake (美濃湖) have been completed, with Kaohsiung officials saying the upgrades will improve access to one of southern Taiwan’s most popular rural tourism destinations.

According to a Liberty Times report, the Kaohsiung City Government Public Works Bureau (高雄市政府工務局), the project resurfaced roughly 43,000 square meters of road around the lake using recycled asphalt concrete. Funding of about NT$10.4 million came from subsidies provided by the National Land Management Agency (國土管理署) under the Ministry of the Interior.

Work focused on several key local routes that connect to the lake area, with officials saying long-term wear had left sections of pavement cracked and uneven, reducing driving quality and safety.

Public Works Bureau Director Yang Chin-fu (楊欽富) said the improvements were designed to upgrade important tourism access routes around the lake while promoting environmentally friendly transportation. Road markings were also updated, with additional stop lines, a new pedestrian crossing, yield markings, slow markings, and box junction markings added at several intersections.

With a water area of about 21 hectares, Meinung Lake is the second-largest artificial lake in Kaohsiung after Chengcing Lake (澄清湖). The lake sits within a landscape of Hakka villages, farmland, and cycling routes, and the surrounding area is planted with diverse trees, flowering shrubs, and aquatic vegetation that attract migratory birds during winter and spring.
