KAOHSIUNG — A Kaohsiung police officer who survived two helicopter crashes during his career was laid to rest on Saturday, eight days after he was found dead at home. Prosecutors said 57-year-old Officer Lin Zhen-li died of a myocardial infarction.
The farewell ceremony was held at the Lung Yen funeral hall in Kaohsiung, with flower arrangements sent by police colleagues and political figures, including Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁), Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang (劉世芳), former Control Yuan president Chen Chu (陳菊), and senior police officials from Kaohsiung and Taipei.

According to the report, the officer was found unresponsive in bed at home on April 11 after family members believed he was still asleep. Emergency personnel later confirmed that he had died. Prosecutors determined the cause of death to be a heart attack. He was 57.
His wife, with whom he had spent 30 years, described his death as devastating and said he had been the family’s main source of support. His daughter said his sudden passing deepened her understanding of love and said she would take care of her mother and grandmother while carrying forward the values he had taught her.
The officer had a long career in law enforcement. He graduated from the 15th class of Taiwan Police College, later completed further studies at Central Police University, and served in a range of roles, including criminal investigation and precinct leadership posts in Kaohsiung. He was later recruited to the Kaohsiung Police Department’s public relations office, where colleagues remembered him as personable and widely respected.
He was also known for twice surviving helicopter crashes while serving in the airborne police unit, now part of the National Airborne Service Corps. In February 2005, he and three others survived after a Dolphin helicopter crashed into the sea off Taichung Port during a rescue training exercise. In January 2008, he was again among the survivors when another helicopter crashed during a mountain rescue mission after its tail rotor struck the ground during landing.
The report also said Lin served as a member of the Thunderbolt Squad, responsible for escorting Hu Guanbao, the man convicted in the Wu Dong-liang (Thomas Wu) kidnapping case, one of Taiwan’s most notorious criminal cases.
