KAOHSIUNG — A car became stuck on the light rail tracks in Gushan District (鼓山區) on Wednesday night, briefly disrupting service but causing no injuries, police said.
The case is at least the seventh publicly reported light rail-related incident or safety issue this year, including two collisions. The city’s Mass Rapid Transit Bureau said there were 24 light rail collision accidents in 2025, down from 33 in 2024.
Police said they received a report at 7:12 p.m. that a vehicle had entered the light rail right-of-way between C18 Gushan District Office Station (鼓山區公所站) and C19 Makadao Station (馬卡道站).
The driver, a 76-year-old man surnamed Wang (王), told police that he was driving east on Housheng Road (厚生路) when he swerved to avoid a pedestrian. He then entered the tracks due to poor nighttime visibility and unfamiliar road conditions.
The car became stuck and could not be moved until a tow truck arrived. Police and Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp. carried out traffic control and adjusted light rail operations until the vehicle was removed.
Police said the driver would be cited under the Mass Rapid Transit Act (大眾捷運法) for entering the light rail’s exclusive right-of-way.
Police urged drivers near light rail corridors to pay attention to signs, road markings, and traffic guidance to avoid entering restricted track areas.
