KAOHSIUNG — A major redevelopment of Cijin Beach (旗津) is expected to be completed by December 2026, adding new visitor facilities and redesigned coastal spaces to one of Kaohsiung’s best-known seaside areas.
The project has a total budget of about NT$478 million and is part of the city’s effort to upgrade Cijin’s tourism facilities and connect the island more closely with Love River Bay and the Asia New Bay Area.
Graham Dart, a long-term American resident of Kaohsiung who managed the Sunset Beach Bar in Cijin from 2017 until this year’s redevelopment, told KHT he’s pleased to see the city make progress. “I’m really happy with the general infrastructure improvements in Kaohsiung over the years,” said Dart. “I’m hopeful the beach development will turn out great.”
Dart said he would continue helping promote Kaohsiung, “as a destination for visitors from other cities who are rediscovering the city, as well as international visitors coming for the first time.”
The Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau said the work includes a visitor service center, a new beach lifeguard station, shower areas, restrooms, and a rebuilt Sunset Bar, along with improvements to existing landscapes and visitor routes.
The city said the design will use beach, dune, oasis, and ocean imagery, while also adding more accessible, gender-friendly, and Muslim-friendly facilities for domestic and international visitors.
The wider plan covers more than the beach itself. The Tourism Bureau said improvements will extend along Cijin’s coastline, from Cihou Mountain (旗後山) in the north toward Windmill Park (風車公園) in the south. Planned work includes improved walking and cycling routes, better separation of people and vehicles, and links between major attractions, including Cijin Beach, Cijin Coastal Park, the Shell Museum, the Sea Pearl, and Windmill Park.
Some nearby upgrades have already been completed. The city recently renovated Cijin Ferry Station, adding improved waiting areas, multilingual signs, and a travel center, which provides maps, travel information, and local cultural products for visitors arriving by ferry.
Cijin Beach remains open year-round when weather allows, but the official attraction page says construction fencing has been in place around the entrance plaza and walkway areas since October. Visitors are advised to follow detour signs during the work period.
