KAOHSIUNG — A woman who has reportedly been stopping students near Zuoying High Speed Rail Station to lecture them about cycling across a pedestrian crossing drew police attention Thursday after turning her criticism on a passerby.
Residents said the woman had appeared near the intersection of High Speed Rail Road (高鐵路) and Chongsin Road (重信路) during the morning commute and sometimes spent several minutes scolding students. When a 53-year-old man tried to calm an exchange at about 7 a.m. Thursday, she allegedly called him “ill-mannered,” according to China Times.
The woman had left by the time officers arrived, police said. They are reviewing surveillance footage to identify her. The man told police he intended to file a complaint over the insult; no complaint had been filed at the time of this report.
There is a twist for anyone tempted to dismiss the woman as a street-corner “Karen”: police said she was right about the cycling rule. Footage showed students riding across the pedestrian crossing instead of dismounting and walking their bicycles, an offense that can carry a fine of NT$300 to NT$1,200. Police said they would increase patrols in the area.
