KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung is strengthening flood preparations as Typhoon Champi (薔琵) moves northwest, with Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) saying rainfall is expected to be its main impact on southern Taiwan on Oct. 23–24.

Speaking Oct. 20, Chen said current forecasts put the storm on a more northerly track, but ordered agencies to prepare low-lying neighborhoods, mountain communities and coastal areas, according to the city government’s announcement.

The Water Resources Bureau (水利局) said all 100 pumping stations, 148 mobile pumps and 29 detention basins had completed readiness checks and functional testing. Crews have also cleared drainage channels prone to silting during August’s heavy rain.

District offices have been instructed to prepare for possible preventive evacuations in high-risk mountain areas and check shelter supplies. Coastal preparations include warnings to fishing vessels and checks at fishing ports.

Residents should monitor Central Weather Administration updates, clear drains around their homes, and prepare flood barriers or sandbags where needed. The city cautioned that the storm’s track and rainfall forecasts could still change.
